The Forensic (ReEntry) Peer Recovery Support Specialist Training offered by PARfessionals is designed to prepare individuals—especially those with lived experience in the justice system—to support peers who are navigating substance use challenges, mental health issues, trauma, and the complex process of reentry into society. The training emphasizes the value of lived experience in building empathy, trust, and resilience, and teaches participants how to effectively use their personal recovery journeys to help others. The course covers a wide range of topics including the core principles of forensic peer support, ethics, cultural competence, the Sequential Intercept Model, harm reduction strategies, motivational interviewing, mental health basics, whole health recovery, and addiction recovery models.
The curriculum is comprehensive, with a detailed 283-page syllabus that equips participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical tools. This program is ideal for individuals who have been incarcerated, are in recovery, or have first-hand experience with the justice system, and who wish to become certified peer recovery specialists. The training was developed by a team of degreed and credentialed professionals—mental health and substance abuse clinicians with experience working in correctional facilities, VA hospitals, drug courts, and academic settings. This unique combination of lived experience and professional expertise makes the training one of the few specialized programs tailored specifically for those involved in justice-related peer support.
